How to Allow Remote Desktop on Norton Internet Security

Norton Internet Security, or NIS, is a security program that has a firewall built into it that blocks certain programs from accessing the Internet. One such program that may be blocked on your computer is the Remote Desktop program, which allows you to remotely access your computer from a remote location. By adding a new firewall rule to NIS, you can allow Remote Desktop connections.

Instructions

  • Launch NIS, and then open the “Personal Firewall” section.

  • Open “Program Control,” then click the “Add” button.

  • Navigate to the “C:\Windows\System32” folder and select “mstsc.exe,” the Remote Desktop executable.

  • Click the “Open” button, click “Permit” and then click the “OK” button.

  • Choose a category for the program, click the “OK” button and then click “OK” again.

How to Allow a Desktop Remote on Norton Internet Security

Remote Desktop connections occur over port 3389 in Windows by default. Norton Internet Security, unless properly configured, may not allow connections through this port. You can change the settings in Norton Internet Security to allow connections through port 3389 by creating a new firewall rule in the software.

Instructions

  • Open Norton Internet Security, click “Norton Internet Security” in the main page and then click the “Settings” button.

  • Click on the “Personal Firewall” option, click “Configure” and then click on the “Personal Firewall” option.

  • Select the “Advanced Settings” option, click the “Configure” button, click the “Add” button and then select the rule to allow a program through a port.

  • Click “Next,” select “Internet” as the type of connection, click “Next” again, select “TCP” as the protocol and then type “3389” as the port.

  • Select the “Next” button twice, type in a name for the rule (such as “Remote Desktop”), then click “Next” and “Finish.”

How to Get Norton Internet Security to Allow File Sharing on My Network

Norton Internet Security blocks local network file sharing options by default when you first install it. In order to allow file sharing, you need to change the trust level of the network from inside Norton Internet Security. Once you perform this action, you’ll be able to share files back and forth on the computer that Norton Internet Security is installed on.
Instructions

  • Open Norton Internet Security, then open the “Network Security Map.”

  • Click on your local network, then click the “Edit” button under the “Network Details” menu.

  • Click on the “Edit” button next to the “Trust Level” section, then select “Full Trust.”

  • Click the “OK” button twice, then click “Close.”
