The Advantages of Having Your Own Facebook Account

Some people are hesitant to use Facebook, perhaps because of negative stories they may have heard, concerns about privacy or simply because they have never tried it. While Facebook may not be without its problems, there are some real advantages to using it, as many people have found. It is up to you to weigh the pros and cons of creating an account of your own.

  1. Finding People

    • If you are wondering about someone whom you have not seen in years, you might find him or her on Facebook. In fact, many people have reconnected with old friends and loved ones through the site. According to its official statistics page, Facebook has over five hundred million active users as of the time of publication. The chances are very good at least some people you know are already on Facebook waiting for you to connect with them. You just need to register at the site and begin searching.

    Staying Connected

    • If you use Facebook, you are never really out of touch with people you know. Once you add a person as a friend on your account, you will know whenever there are updates, uploaded photos and other new information on his or her profile — unless your friend blocks you from seeing updates — through your news feed. You can contact one another anytime from any place in the world where you have access to the Internet.

    Sharing

    • There are all kinds of information you can share on Facebook, including news, stories, pictures, videos, links and events. While you can share all these even without a Facebook account, you would resort to a variety of tools and services such as email, instant messaging, online file storage, blogs and discussion forums. With Facebook, you can do away with your other accounts and use just your profile. This would save you time and effort.

    Promotion

    • Facebook has become a platform for self-promotion for businesses, individuals and nonprofit causes. You can customize your profile to display your work history and educational background for prospective employers to see. If you are affiliated with a business entity and you are authorized to do so, you can create a page for that business. Nonprofit causes can make use of a special Facebook application known as “Causes.”

    Getting Together

    • Facebook makes organizing parties, reunions and gatherings a lot easier. There is no need to call up or send email to each person you want to invite to an event. You can simply publish the event on Facebook and send an invitation to your contacts in one place. Because users log in to their accounts often — half of active members do so everyday — people can respond quickly to your invitation or send you a note if they cannot be there.

How to Look for People on Facebook through City and State

Filter search results to find a friend in a particular location.

As Facebook is becoming more accessible around the globe, it is possible to find long-lost friends from the comfort of your living room. However, it may be difficult to find the person you are looking for if he has a fairly common name and doesn’t have a helpful profile picture. There are a few ways to cut down the possibilities. With the Facebook Search feature, you can filter your results to look for people by location.

Instructions

  • Click the “Search” text box at the top of any Facebook page, and type in the name of the person you wish to find.
  • Click the “Search” icon to the right of the box, which looks like a magnifying glass.
  • Click “People” on the left side of the page to display only people and filter out businesses, events, groups and other pages.
  • Type the name of the city where you believe the person lives in the box next to “Location,” near the top of the results page.
  • Click on a person’s name to view his profile, or click “Add as Friend” to send a Friend Request.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may not be able to find everyone who has a Facebook page using the “Search” method, because some people have privacy settings that hide their profiles from searches.
  • If you are looking for a way to browse all profiles within a particular city and state, Facebook does not have such an option. If you do want to browse profiles that are publicly posted, however, you could type the name of the city and state along with the word “Facebook” into a search engine and find some results.

How to Find Friends on Facebook by Location

Whether you’re trying to find a classmate, neighbor or simply can’t remember a friend’s Facebook login name, looking someone up by location may be your best bet. Using a location search is also a simple way to get new location Facebook contacts if you’re interested in meeting new people. With these tips, you’ll discover how easy it is to use existing tools to find friends on Facebook by location whether you want to find old pals or make friends or business contacts on the social networking site.

 Instructions

  • Ensure you’re signed up and logged in to the website to find friends on Facebook by location. If you aren’t, simply set up a free Facebook account by heading to Facebook.com and entering your name, email address, password and birthday.

  • Save time by compiling a list of locations to check on the social networking site. If you’re looking for a current friend or relative on Facebook, note the city and state they live in or an alternate location if they typically use different contact information online. If you’re trying to make new friends, note locations near you or the spots where you want to generate contacts.

  • Locate the Friends menu on your Facebook page and pull down to Find Friends to open the screen called Find Your Friends on Facebook. Choose your first location to search by entering a city and state in the search field.

  • Narrow your choices if the Facebook search turns up too many results. If you’re hoping to find classmate, former co-worker or old neighbor Facebook pages, for example, consider locating common acquaintances who haven’t moved by searching for their names or locations with the Find Your Friends on Facebook search. An intermediary may be able to give you the person’s Facebook name or their last known location.

  • Contact the person you were looking for or any interesting people you’ve found on the social networking site when trying to find friends on Facebook by location. Just click on the person’s name and choose the Add as Friends selection.

How to Upload Facebook Photos

Facebook is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular social networking sites. For those of you out there new to Facebook, learn what you need to do to upload photos to your profile so that your Facebook friends can keep up to date on your life and activities.

Instructions

  • Login to your Facebook page. Once logged in, click on “profile” from the options at the top of the screen.

  • Once you are on your Facebook profile page, click on “View Photos of Me” which is located directly underneath your profile picture.

  • Click on the “Create a Photo Album” button on the top right of the new screen.

  • Now you will be able to name your new photo album. You can also add a location and description of your album but those items are not necessary. After location and description you will be able to set your privacy perameters for your album. This is very important to use if you do not feel that the photos you are adding are appropriate to be seen by some of your Facebook friends. This often includes coworkers and family members. The drop-down box when you click on “Privacy” will give you several options for who will be able to see your album, including the ability to customize and select specific friends to block from seeing this album.

  • Now click on “Create Album.” This brings you to the screen where you actually upload the photos. Click on “Try the Simple Uploader.” This will install itself quickly and will make your photo uploading experience much, much faster.

  • Now that you have uploaded your Simple Uploader, use the tool to select which photos you would like to upload from your computer or camera memory card. If you are trying to upload a photo from the internet, it must be saved to your computer first.

  • Once you have selected all of the photos you would like to be included in this Facebook album, click upload. Do not navigate away from this page while the upload is in progress because it will interupt the process and you will have to select all of the photos all over again.

  • When it is finished uploading, it will bring you to a page that shows all of the photos you have in that album on the right of the page with the ability to write text next to each photo on the left. These captions will show up underneath your photos when viewed from the finished Facebook album.

  • Beneath each photo there is a box that will also allow you to select which picture you want as your album cover. Your album cover just means what photo will show up to represent the entire album on your Facebook profile. If you do not want to pick a specific photo, it will default to the first one in the album.

  • When you are done adding captions and selecting your album cover, click on “Save Changes.” Now a box will pop up that says “There are photos which have not yet been published to your Profile or to News Feed.” It then gives you the option to “Publish” or “Skip.” If you want to publish, this simply means that the photos will show up on your Facebook homepage news feed and on the news feeds of your friends. It will also show up as a post on your Wall that says something to the effect of “so and so just added a new photo album.” If you click “skip,” your albums will just appear as part of your profile without any announcement anywhere else.

  • Now that your album is uploaded, you will be able to view it from your Facebook profile. When you click on your album, you will always have the opportunity at the top of the page to edit, organize or add more photos if you ever want to make changes to the album. At this point all that is left to do is get Tagging and enjoy sharing your photos with your friends and family!

How to Remove a Poke From Facebook

A Facebook poke can have a variety of meanings.

When a friend wants to let you know she is thinking of you, she can “poke” you on Facebook. If you are poked, you receive a notification on your Facebook page along with the name of the user who poked you. After viewing the poke, you can permanently remove the notification from your page. You can only receive one poke from a user at a time. Therefore, removing the poke allows the user to poke you again in the future. Instructions

  • Open a Web browser and sign into your Facebook account.
  • Click “Home” on the menu at the top of the page.
  • Locate the “Pokes” section on the right side of the page. This section lists all the pokes you have received.
  • Click the “X” icon next to the poke you want to remove.

What Does Poke Mean on Facebook?

Poking someone gets her attention -- Facebook virtual pokes do the same thing.

On a long car trip, if the dialogue turns physical, you know that kids poke and jab at each other as a way to tease, flirt, annoy or otherwise say, “Pay attention to me” or “Don’t forget I’m here.” The social-networking site Facebook has a virtual “poke” feature that serves the same function.

Definition

A Facebook poke is a free feature that allows you to send a virtual “Hey, I was here” message. The poke shows up on your friend’s page as an icon that denotes who poked him and offers the options “Remove Poke” or “Poke Back.” If you receive the icon on your page, only you — not the visitors to your page — will see it, and if you don’t poke back or remove it, the person who sent it can’t poke you again. Once you hide the poke or poke back, however, that person is free to poke you again. Facebook’s settings allow you to request an email when you receive a poke.
Location

When you visit a friend’s Facebook homepage, look in the upper high-hand corner for the gray button that says “Poke” and contains an image of a finger poking. The button is directly to the right of the “Send Message” button. Click “Poke”; no further action is required. When you visit your own homepage, you won’t see the poke button because you can’t poke yourself; on your page, you’ll find the “Edit Profile” button instead.
Allowed Pokes

You are allowed to poke someone who is a confirmed friend of yours, a friend of a confirmed friend or a person in a shared network. The same three categories of Facebook users can poke you as well.
Poking Add-Ons

Several free programs allow you to automatically poke friends. Facebook Autopoke 3.5 pokes back friends listed on your home page. SuperPoke lets you poke with “little extra” icons such as kiss, high five, hug, cuddle or spank, among others. To send a poke from your android phone, try AutoPoke, available from AndroLib; the program requires that you have SMS alerts enabled on your Facebook account.
